By Georgia O’Connor-Harding CONSTRUCTION activity easing off from peak rebuild levels has led to Selwyn’s economy slowing during the first half of the year, a new report shows. Economic consultancy group Infometrics says the district’s growth domestic product had increased 1.1 per cent in the year to June, compared to a 4.7 per cent growth the previous year. Selwyn’s real estate market faced a challenging autumn and first half of the winter with house sales falling 4.8 per cent. The report said this pattern trends with Christchurch where post-earthquake building has rapidly pushed up supply against demand. House sales in the Canterbury region have fallen 8.6 per cent. Deputy Mayor Malcolm Lyall said the decrease is most likely reflected on the fact the building boom in Christchurch has tailed off. House prices had increased by 2.4 per cent. •Turn to page 7

COMMONSENSE looks like prevailing over the future of the Sheffield Community Hall (see page 3). The district council says it will step in and pay for quake repairs. But the flip side is that if the council does it, the hall comes under its control. There’s good logic to that. As in any small community, there is often differences of opinion over the use/ownership of public facilities, and it would be fair to say the Sheffield hall is no different. There’s history, tradition and a way of doing things that has lasted a long time. There is a concern that if the hall goes out of local hands, the district council could do anything with it; possibly even knock it down. But that won’t happen if it is going to spend 300k on repairs. - Barry Clarke

Community could lose Sheffield hall to council

Nearly $300,000 was approved by the district council in March to go towards seismic strengthening of the Douglas hall. Instead of reforming the trust, one of the alternative was the hall could be vested in the council and vested back to the people if they wanted it, he said. No-one was injured in the blaze and it’s not suspicious, said a fire and emergency communications spokesman.

OBJECTIONS TO a new offlicence bottle store in Lincoln have prompted the owner to pull out. Dipin Kalra has withdrawn an application to operate the Lincoln Bottle Store he wanted to open Gerald St, less than 100m from Super Liquor. There were 100 objections to the application, including Lincoln High School and Lincoln Primary School. Lincoln High principal Kathy Paterson said it was good news. “We didn’t feel there needed to be anymore so it is really encouraging. They have obviously listened to feedback and done the right thing,” she said. Lincoln Primary principal Vivienne Butcher said it is good outcome as there were already enough alcohol outlets in the area. “It is reflective of what the needs are and reflective of the community saying we don’t need another liquor outlet which is great,” she said. Maddie goes from her hospital bed to a saddle By Gabrielle Stuart and Georgia O’ConnorHarding ONLY LAST week Maddie Collins was back in hospital fighting a potentially lifethreatening infection. But within three days she was back out horse-riding at her competitive best. The West Melton teenager, who needs a potentially lifesaving kidney transplant in the United States, was taken to hospital with peritonitis – an infection of the lining around her abdomen. But shortly after being discharged from Christchurch Hospital, Maddie, 13, was back out riding her way to victory in the North Loburn Equestrian Spring Dressage tournament. Maddie was discharged on Wednesday night and had only been out of hospital for three days when she went on to win all of her four dressage events for her level, making her the champion of the competition. “I don’t know how she does it. How she can go from a high-dependency unit to winning a horse show. Her stamina is just incredible,” her mother Sarah Manson Collins said. “It has absolutely shattered her but it’s what she wants to be doing. It’s what keeps her well.” Maddie’s instructor Cheryl French, of Carnmore Equestrian, said Maddie has got huge riding talent. “She did very well to last two days competing and still stayed bright and cheery and gets on so well with the other kids that come to us. She is a real inspiration to all of us,” she said. Mrs Manson Collins said Maddie will continue with heavy treatment for the next two weeks and has had to go back into hospital most days for blood tests since she was discharged. Maddie has had the condition before, when she was five-years-old, and ended up on life support because of it. Treatment for the infection was complicated by the medication and dialysis treatment Maddie needs for kidney failure. Mrs Manson Collins said Maddie had been in a lot of pain, but was staying positive. She said on the way home from hospital Maddie told her “thank you for looking after me so well”. “As she is getting older, she is more

Last week marked five years since Maddie’s father, Adam Collins, donated one of his kidneys to her. Five hours after the operation, her body rejected it. Her family has been fundraising to get Maddie a kidney transplant in the US, where the treatment offered would make it less likely a donated kidney would be rejected. But the treatment would cost more than $700,000, and is also conditional on Maddie’s brother, Tomas, donating one of his kidneys to an American patient as part of a “paired exchange” programme. Mrs Manson Collins said she hoped Maddie’s story would inspire people to become organ donors.

Medicinal cannabis trial By Bridget Rutherford LINCOLN University has been approached to help carry out a medicinal cannabis trial. A university spokeswoman said a private New Zealand company asked Lincoln to assist with the technical aspects of a medicinal cannabis project. She said the university needed to gain the appropriate licenses before commencing the commercial contract. “Due to the confidential nature of the contractual arrangements, we are unable to comment further at this stage.” After widespread campaigning to make cannabis-based medication available in New Zealand, former Associate Health Minister Peter Dunne delegated approval for medical marijuana use applications to the Ministry of Health in February. In June, he announced restrictions would be removed on pain relief cannabidiol so doctors could prescribe it without Ministry approval. By Andrew King FOR THREE West Melton residents, a smoke alarms were the difference between life and death after a fire ripped through their home last week. Five fire crews battled for about three-and-a-half hours to get the blaze on Calders Rd under control which started at 3.10am on Tuesday. Two men and a woman escaped the flames after a smoke alarm woke one of the trio up, who then alerted the others, specialist fire investigator Kerri Pring said. One of the occupants was the son of the landowner, she said. Once they were outside they phoned 111. Kirwee chief fire officer Hamish Jones was one of the first on the scene and said without the smoke alarms, they would have been looking at fatalities. “They saved their lives, and it a reason why we keep saying check your smoke alarms are working,” he said. He said the house was “well involved” when they arrived. The house was completely destroyed. The fire has been ruled as accidental, most likely electrical, Ms Pring said.

This stems from the efforts of visitors to experience New Zealand “on the cheap” but unfortunately that is all they, or most of them, consider. My wife and I, along with another 60,000-odd people, are members of the NZ Mobile Caravan Association. We often get confused with freedom campers for, in fact, that is what we are as

However, our difference is that we operate in CRC vans and caravans (certified self contained) and in order to park in these places, also our many privately leased and owned grounds as well as Department of Conservation parks and national park areas, we must not only keep these vans up-to-date but also to display evidence of such. Our rules are stringent — no disposal of trash, grey water or sewage anywhere other than in dump stations provided in various locations. Although most local bodies have now become aware of who we are this is not always the case with private citizens who often mistake us for overseas tourists or at least among the people who spread the mess. In order to attempt to gain a higher profile we as an organisation conduct a national clean-up day over the entire country from Northland to Southland where at least some of this litter is collected and dumped correctly. Although it would be great to be able to clean up entire areas we at least do think it is important to be seen doing the correct thing and maybe as membership grows in strength it will be possible to get closer to this goal.

Remember we are all responsible for challenging anti-social behaviour and tidying the environment. A reader responds to Selwyn Times’ article on having the second most dangerous rural intersections in the country. Readers were asked if they thought the intersections in the district were dangerous Heather Cooper – Yes, I find the intersections in Selwyn dangerous. I drive most days from Halswell to Prebbleton. It would be so good to have the speed limit lowered or street lights be put in. The intersection at Springs Rd and Marshs Rd is particularly dangerous. For turning traffic from any direction, or to go across the Springs Rd/Marshs Rd from one side of Marshs to the other. No matter which road you are on and turning onto the other is scary. If turning from either section of Marshs onto Springs Rd towards Prebbleton the traffic is going so

Achieving goals fast. I would never try to turn right there from either section of Marshs Rd. Turning left can also be difficult with the speed of traffic when turning from Springs Rd into either section of Marshs Rd. You pull into the turning section, however, if a car/ute/truck is in the other turning section, it means you can’t see around those vehicles to see if there is traffic going straight through. If the traffic flow is very low this intersection is safe. But this is not often. Even with the new motorway in place I still believe there is still going to be significant traffic to warrant some changes to be made there. I have seen some very near misses and pray it doesn’t take a death or very serious injury before something changes. A lower speed limit would be a great start. Other intersections off Springs and Shands Rd are also a worry.

IT’S NOW just over a year since our local elections and I really want to say thanks for all the encouragement and support I have received since becoming mayor. It’s such a privilege to be the mayor of Selwyn and I am loving it. Every day is different but the one things that remains is knowing that I work for and alongside great people who are progressing things for our community. THere have obviously been some very large sudden events this year that have taken a lot of my time, particularly the Port Hills fire and the winter floods but I would like to share with you the thing that I know will bare fruit for Selwyn’s future – good people trusting and empowering each other to get the job done. I believe that part of leadership is about using

your influence to help others achieve their goals. Our council includes 11 awesome councillors from across Selwyn and at the beginning of our term together we agreed on some strategic outcomes. Since then we have appointed councillors to particular projects to champion project development and delivery and to provide governance input to the process. Each of the councillors is doing a marvellous job at connecting community expectation with council delivery and while every project can’t be delivered concurrently we are all walking towards that delivery. Councillors work long hours while also juggling many responsibilities at home and in other jobs. So this is a shout out to you councillors, thank you for all you do for Selwyn.

Speed limits on multiple roads in Halswell were reduced earlier this year. Halswell Junction Rd was reduced from 60km/h to 50km/h, Quaifes Rd from 80km/h to 50km/h and 100m of Quaifes Rd south-east of Whincops Rd from 80km/h to 70km/h. Marshs Rd was reduced from 80km/h to 70km/h, Sparks Rd from 80km/h to 60km/h and Sutherlands Rd from 80km/h to 60km/h. Time for a spring clean? A Garden Waste and Scrap Metal Drop-Off Day will take place in Malvern on Saturday 28 October, 10am–4pm at Hawkins Pit, Darfield. The entry is off Cullens Road, east of Bangor Road. This is a good chance to clean up your backyard and garden and drop off garden waste and scrap metal to a local collection point. Garden prunings, tree trimmings and weeds will be accepted, as well as metals, bicycles, BBQs, small appliances, whiteware, tins, pots and pans. We don’t accept general rubbish, flax, cabbage tree leaves, trees/branches over 10cm thick, gas bottles, items containing oil/fuel, TVs, or tyres. Please separate metal and garden waste. Only household amounts of waste will be accepted (not commercial volumes). Scrap metal drop off is free. With school returning for term four this week, the 20K Either Way school bus campaign is under way to raise awareness of safe driving around school buses collecting or dropping off children. Many Selwyn children in both rural areas and townships throughout the district take the bus to school. Tony Rabbidge, Managing Director of Torlesse Travel Ltd which operates school buses in Selwyn, says bus companies are always aware of safety when buses are stopped, but it’s up to everyone driving on the road to ensure our children are safe.

“Our drivers do not open the door until they can see the road is clear on country roads. However, this does not work so well on the busy highways. I drive a bus every day myself and have felt frustrated with speeding vehicles passing us,” he says. Recent reports suggest that many drivers are ignoring the 20km/h speed limit, with some not making any attempt to slow down at all. Drivers in a hurry who speed around a stationary school bus are a serious danger to school children getting off and on. The law in New Zealand is for drivers to drive at 20km/h per hour in either direction when passing a stationary school bus. This is the same rule on the open road or in town. Selwyn District Council School Road Safety Coordinator Stephanie Hautler says it’s important for everyone to just slow down. “I don’t know if drivers are not aware of the law or if it’s because we’re all in a hurry, but these are potentially your children, nieces and nephews, or grandchildren,” she says. Next time you approach a school bus, take time to slow down, and remember it’s 20K Either Way.

Prebbleton coach Derek Todd said Murgatroyd’s organisational skills, game management and ability to produce the goods when it mattered made him

stand out this year. “To me, the thing that stands out about him is his ability to really step up in the big games. He’s a big game player,” said Todd. Murgatroyd helped Prebbleton to one of their best seasons in recent times, which included their first win over rivals Lincoln in more than a decade. “Prebbleton’s building really nicely for the next couple of years,” said Murgatroyd.

Ellesmere rugby award A staple of Murgatroyd’s rugby since his junior rugby days in North Canterbury has been playing alongside his twin brother Guy, who plays half-back for Prebbleton. to Christchurch and ended up playing at Prebbleton so I kind of just followed him really,” said Murgatroyd. The second-five didn’t expect to continue representative rugby so deep into the season. But after a string of outings for the Canterbury development team – which works as a feeder to the Canterbury Mitre 10 Cup team – he is keen to push onto even higher honours in the future. “It’s definitely on the radar

but I’ll just take it as it comes. I started this season with no intention of playing rep rugby. I just wanted to enjoy it and then one thing led to another” said Murgatroyd.

Good showing by young Lincoln karter By Gordon Findlater LINCOLN’S JACOB Douglas has spent the last three weeks taking on the best young kart racers from all parts of the world. Jacob, 12, finished the trip by finishing 20th in the Mini Rok Vortex Trophy at the Rok Cup International Finals at the weekend in Italy. He was effected by engine issues going into the final day. However, the opening day of the championship was a highlight for Jacob who set a blistering time of 55.015sec the eight overall quickest time from 162 drivers. Jacob finished sixth in his first heat race. In heat two Jacob was turned around early in the race, eventually recovering to finish 22nd. His strongest result came in heat three which produced a third place finish. His final heat race saw him finish 15th. Leading up to the Rok Cup Jacob competed in the United States at the Streets of Lancaster Grand Prix where he finished ninth in the final after starting from the back of the pack. He also competed at the Trofeo D’Autunno (Autumn Trophy) series in Italy.

Rugby volunteer and players recognised •From page 1 Following his playing days, Grimwood coached a number of teams at the club including winning eight titles with the under-18 side in 14 final appearances. He also officiated for nine years. Grimwood became a committee member in 1990, vice president in 1993, and president from 1994-1996, and again from 2003-2015. But it all nearly fell over 20 years ago when he was diagnosed with a rare kidney disorder – nephrotic syndrome – which can lead to irreparable kidney damage leading to kidney failure, necessitating treatment with dialysis or, eventually, kidney transplant. Fortunately, his older sister Julie Grimwood was a living donor match and was able to give him one of hers. “It was a pretty nice thing of her to do and I am so thankful,” he said. He said it is hard to pin down a favourite moment at the club. “It’s bloody hard to single any out, they become a blur after being there that long. There have been some good years and bad years, but you just have to take it on the chin and keep going,” he said. The rivalries have been memorable for him and he can still remember a chant taught to him in the first days when he arrived at the club. “I think it went: ‘Tai Tap rats,

Born and raised in North Canterbury, Grimwood moved to Christchurch in 1975 and played for a Suburbs and Albion for a few seasons before the call of country rugby got the better of him. “In those days Prebbleton was the closest club to town so that’s where I went. I haven’t looked back,” he said.

He married Donna in 1977 and they have three children together, Nikki, Leigh and Craig. Nikki played hockey for the Black Sticks women, Leigh played for the under-21 national hockey team and Craig played rugby, at Prebbleton, for 23 years. “We kind of fell into hockey with the girls. My son was a half back from the junior grades right up to the division one side,” he said. So what next for Grimmy? “I’ll just keep plugging away with the club. It’s a great club, with great people and facilities,” he said. On your bike to a Heritage Week event Beca Heritage Week is under way with more than 50 events planned throughout Canterbury. Gabrielle Stuart reports CHRISTCHURCH’S history as a cycling city is set to be a feature of Heritage Week this year, celebrating 200 years since the invention of the bicycle. More than 50 community events are set to be held across Canterbury to mark Beca Heritage Week, of which Star Media is a major sponsor. It will run until October 23. Stories from Christchurch’s cycling history will be told in films and an exhibition running at the Arts Centre. Cycle events are being held across the world this year to mark the anniversary of German aristocrat Karl von Drais’ 1817 invention of the bicycle – which was originally called the ‘dandy horse’. City council heritage team leader Brendan Smyth said it would mark Christchurch’s past and the “renaissance of cycling” expected as the city council’s 13 major cycle routes are progressively opened at a cost of $156 million. The 150th anniversary of the Lyttelton Railway Tunnel opening will also be celebrated as part of Heritage Week, with an exhibition at the Lyttelton Library. Mr Smyth said he hoped the events would encourage people to get into the city. “People think heritage means looking back, but actually acknowledging our heritage is really positive and a really important part of rebuilding our city for the future,” he said.

children at the Lincoln Events Centre. The Black Ferns won the Women’s Rugby World Cup in August this year and brought along the cup for the children to see.

Principal’s Message Welcome Welcome to our third community newsletter for 2017. The purpose of this newsletter is to share with our wider community the news and events from Darfield High School. Although we have a regular electronic newsletter that goes to our families, we want to be able to keep in touch with all of those in the area that we serve. We are proud of our school and the achievement of our students and we want to share this with you.

Celebrating 20 Years: Our Friendship With Akitakata On Friday 18 August, Mayor Hamada of Akitakata City, accompanied by other adults and 20 students, visited to celebrate 20 years of friendship. Akitakata School and Darfield High School formed a sister school relationship and this was celebrated with junior school students at Darfield High School. A cherry blossom tree was planted as a symbol of peace and friendship. The Chair of the Sister City Committee in Selwyn, Mrs Allison Rosanowski (former Darfield High School Principal), who signed the sister school agreement with Takamiya Junior High School in 1997), attended this ceremony along with a former Selwyn District Mayor, Kelvin Coe. Rachael Phillipson, our Head Girl, made a speech and planted a cherry tree with students from Akitakata School. We hope our relationship will continue well into the future.

Senior Formal This year, the chosen theme for the Formal was A Night at the Casino and the Formal Committee did an outstanding job with decorating the hall. Everyone looked stunning and it definitely was a highlight of our school year. Appreciating our Supporters Each year, the Board and staff of DHS like to take time to recognise the contribution made by supporters of our school. It is a convivial evening where we join together, have a bite to eat and a drink, and pause to acknowledge the variety of volunteer support they provide. Across the school, help is provided by coaching sports teams, helping at camps, assisting at assessment time, catering at events, and providing work experience and interview practice. We are humbled by the many members of the community who give freely of their valuable time to help us regularly throughout the year. Supporters’ Evening was recognition of that and it was a great night!

Where were you when the kowhai bloomed? This whakataukì, or proverb, refers to the numerous tasks and work that need to be undertaken in spring in preparation for the food-gathering journeys during summer. It is said to remind people of the need to work hard at this time of the year and to encourage them to work together to achieve great things. (Information taken from comments by Craig Pauling in Te Ara Kakariki’s October newsletter.) The whakataukì stood out for me because there is a large kowhai at the main entrance to the school that puts on a magnificent display of yellow flowers at this time of year. This is only too brief as it becomes a yellow carpet on the ground as the flowers fall. It is appropriate as well, because spring is the time our students are preparing for their NCEA exams. Whilst the end of year exams are not the one-off, big deal they were in the days of School Certificate, they are, nevertheless, a significant event for most students. The proverb also speaks of working together. For NCEA exams, it is the joint efforts of students, parents and teachers that help to support students achieving well. It is worth recognising, too, the support that students can provide each other as they prepare. If you want to be a successful sportsperson, you need to practise your sport regularly, and very regularly before games. If you want to be a successful musician, you need to practise with your instrument regularly, and very regularly before important performances. If you want to be successful with academic studies, you need to practise answering questions regularly, and very regularly before exams. NCEA exams begin in fewer than three weeks so, for those sitting them, don’t procrastinate—if you don’t know what or how to study, then see your teacher. There is a wide range of resources and support available for students; however, my top five study tips are: • Make a plan of what to study and when • Find out exactly what you need to study for each exam • Do lots and lots of practice exam questions • Ask for help when needed—be specific • Start now

Thank you In this newsletter, we enjoy sharing some of the successes of the previous term. So many of these successes depend on the school working with parents and community. I would like to celebrate those staff, parents and others in the community who contribute their time, energy and skills for activities for students beyond the core subjects they normally take in school. These sporting, cultural and academic activities are an important part of the culture of our school and the learning that students do. In noting a few recent examples, I keep in mind that this is only a small part of the picture of contributions to the school. Rather, these are examples that illustrate the value of those who can go the extra mile. Recently, hockey, basketball, rugby and netball teams competed in the national Secondary Schools’ Tournament Week in various locations around the South Island. In order for the students to be part of this, we rely on the dedication throughout the season of the coaches, managers and parents (often the same person!) to prepare, transport and manage the teams. Each year the Malvern Lions club run two ‘Fries Days’ at the school to raise funds for our Young Achievers reward trip. For each of these, a big team of Lions volunteers donate their time to run the production of the food. We appreciate Lions ongoing support of our school and the students. Year 12 students participate in an interview day where they are interviewed by employers in mock job interviews as part of their preparation for real interviews in the future. Many local businesses and individuals give their time for a day to provide this valuable learning experience. James Morris Principal

Keiai Visitors We welcomed Mr Atsushi Katagiri and 13 students from Keiai High School in Japan and over two weeks they visited Rubicon Farm for horseriding and Jetboating, attended cooking and Te Reo classes, went to the Antarctic Centre and up the Christchurch Gondola, and even to Hanmer Springs—a busy programme which ended with a farewell dinner.

Two teams of French students took part in the cooking competition this year held at Shirley Boys’ High. This “Masterchef” like competition gives them two hours to cook a meal and impress the French judges. Students must work with recipes written in French and present their dishes to the judges in French! This year, the competition was held at Shirley Boys’ High. In the five years the competition has been running, Darfield High has won four times and once again, the Year 9 team (above) were proud to accept the cup and prizes for first place! Chocolate was the theme so they presented a beef stew called Daube de Boeuf à la Gasconne; it had dark chocolate and red wine in the sauce! And dessert was Mousse au Chocolat Blanc (white chocolate mousse).

Every year, students surprise us and the community with their amazing talent and, once again, they put on a fabulous night of music, singing and dancing. It was a difficult task for 24/7 Youth Workers, Hannah Cossey, Josh Wright and Mitch Shaw, to judge all the students but, in the end, it was the Jazz Ensemble who took out the awards for Most Entertaining and Overall Winner.

House Quiz Another House event in our calendar is the House Quiz and this occurred over three lunchtimes. Students make up teams of four and answer a range of questions in different sections. Music, native birds, sports and geography were a few of the topics and then there is a famous person to guess from several clues. Tawera won, followed by Rawhiti, Kikorangi and Waimakariri. Well done to all those who gained points for their House.

Japanese Day Year 10 Japanese students attended the Japanese afternoon at Villa Maria College along with seven other high schools from the region. This event included a kendo demonstration from the Christchurch Kendo Club with an opportunity to participate, the chance to have a go at origami, kanji writing, and kendama and a chance to wear traditional clothing, which is called Yukata. The afternoon finished with a visit to an Asian supermarket and the chance to explore and buy foods to take home.

World Vision 40 Hour Famine Awards Night Over 30 schools and groups from the South Island attended the Awards Night to celebrate those who participated and did well this year. Our student representatives were caught by surprise when Darfield High School was the first school announced as a recipient of an Excellence Award!

Merit Award for Trudy McKay At the SLANZA (School Library Association of New Zealand Aotearoa) Conference, our librarian, Trudy McKay (right), was presented with the Award of Merit for Librarian. She was one of only three recipients of this award nationally. At the award ceremony it was said that “Trudy McKay is a committed and professional librarian whose work reflects all aspects of best practice in a busy school library. She gives considered advice, takes the initiative and is utterly reliable. She is committed to her school library, to student achievement and to her community. Trudy is an outstanding school librarian.”

Planting for Greenway Canterbury Mizuho Iwasaki and her international group friends joined a Te Ara Kãkãriki Greenway Canterbury Trust volunteer planting day. Planting the trees was a first for her and not as easy as she’d anticipated. Twelve hundred trees were planted in three areas.

With the warmer weather, the Year 8s have made progress on their garden area. Mitre 10 Mega donated building materials for the students to build planter boxes, soil was delivered and there are plans to build bench seats, plant seeds and add irrigation to the site. Mayor Sam Broughton, visited the garden area with students (right) and Mr Morris to discuss the overall plan and gave them some ideas to think about.

Ki o Rahi Tournament

Lincoln High School hosted the Ki o Rahi tournament run by Ara this year. Sixteen teams from the Canterbury region competed and, overall, it was a successful day with Darfield placing 4th and everyone enjoying themselves. Well done to Isaac Proud for winning Fairest Player in the Tournament.

Darfield Blue Win The Jane Sullivan Trophy Twenty-one teams and 14 schools represented meant the Canterbury Secondary Schools One Day Event was going to be a huge event. Perhaps the most coveted prize in interschool equestrian competition, due to the popularity of eventing, winning this was going to be no mean feat. Darfield Blue: Katherine Hadler, Charlotte Thomas, Sophie Jarvis and Georgia Allison were leading after the dressage and, after superb cross-country and showjumping rounds, won the event and with it the Jane Sullivan Trophy. Darfield Maroon: Jodie Rollings,

Skiing

Our skiing students have had a great season this winter spending afternoons up at Porters and some entering competitions with great results. Mari Henderson placed second at the Canterbury P & I Championships at Mt Cheeseman. Georgi Pander placed first in his category at the Mt Hutt Ski Championships, and also competed at the South Island Ski Championships in Wanaka, placing 2nd in the Downhill and 3rd in the Cross Country. Jordan Yaxley and Mari Henderson placed 1st in their divisions at the Porters Ski Derby and the mixed team of Jordan, Tom Freeman, Mari and Monique Weber (above) were the overall winners on the day. Georgi Pander and TJ Davis recently gained their Level 1 Ski Instructor’s Certificate at Porters and this is an option that will become available next winter to other students engaged in the Ski Programme.

Caitlin Rayne and Mikayla Jarvis also had a superb day, finishing fourth after their dressage, and fourth overall. Darfield White: Caitlin Aubrey, Cassandra Aubrey and Niamh Rayne had some super performances, with just a few errors meaning the team did not put up a live score. At the end of the day, Darfield High School took two of the top six positions. Team Manager, Nicky Voss, said it was an impressive sight to see ten riders enter the arena for Prizegiving all wearing the school colours.

The Koru Games is a big sport tournament held over several days and schools come from all around the South Island to compete. Wet weather was definitely challenging because of the mud but spirits were high and students had a great time. Girls’ and Boys’ Football, Sevens, Touch, Volleyball and Netball teams competed; congratulations to the Netball girls (above) who placed 2nd, the Football girls who placed 3rd and the Boys’ Sevens placed 3rd.

Nathan Carter received a Gold medal for his outstanding accomplishment at the National Secondary Schools’ Cross Country Championships held recently in Christchurch. James Morris and Karen Armstrong, Sport Co-ordinator, presented him with his medal and certificate (below) at assembly and we were pleased we could all share in his success.

It is now that time of the year when the process for selecting next year’s prefects is well under way. Recently, a two-day Leadership Camp was held at the Craigieburn Environmental Centre; it was snowing up there as they arrived! The students listened to speakers and took part in many activities and challenges over the weekend. These were designed to see how they worked together, and solved problems and how they dealt with pressure. Next year’s leaders will be announced at Senior Prizegiving.

Wainui was the destination for Year 13 Biology students to carry out their Animal Study Investigation. The practical work involved taking transects of different intertidal zones followed by collecting Half Crabs, which were needed for the experiment. Some of the students were initially rather reluctant to touch the crabs, let alone catch them but, after the first hour, they were fascinated by what they were finding and fully engrossed in their task. The students set up their experiments afterwards and spent the rest of their time collecting and interpreting data. This activity reinforced ideas of experimental design, and gave the students an opportunity to make mistakes, work out solutions, and realise some of the difficulties in carrying out behavioural experiments on animals. Back in class, they set about analysing their results and writing their reports.

September is camp month for the Year 8s and there was a lot of excitement as they headed off to Mt Hutt Retreat with loads of activities planned for them. Abseiling, mountain biking, team initiative games and archery are just some of the challenges for them to face. Loads of fun was had in the evenings as they all helped in the kitchen and then took part in games and competitions.

David Elliot (above), prizewinner of this year’s NZ Book Awards for Children and Young Adults, and other significant awards for writing and illustration, visited school to talk to students and engage them in a two-hour workshop. They were taken on a journey using the same techniques he uses to illustrate books. The students left with a how-to sheet they created themselves and the inspiration to put in the hard work and value their imaginations.

Get2Go Challenge Katie Molloy, Issy Kennedy, Zahara Sutton, Maia Adams, Isaac Earl, Angelo Barrimond, Jack Kennedy and Will Davidson had a lot of fun and learnt that communication and teamwork paid off as they challenged themselves in the Get2Go Challenge. After training several times a week, mountain biking, water challenges, orienteering and problem solving provided for an exciting day. They can’t wait to go back next year, now they know what to expect!

Darfield Bakery Visit The Year 11 Commerce students had the pleasure of having Daryl Collier, the owner of the Darfield Bakery, come in and share his business experiences. During a question and answer session, he shared his knowledge about business successes and the challenges you face along way. Then students had the opportunity to visit and see the operations of the Bakery and make connections to the information they learned during the question and answer session. Some of the highlights included seeing the oven that was large enough to stand in and can bake 240 pies at one time, sampling some of the products and, of course, looking highly fashionable in the health and safety regulation hair nets.

Author’s controversial look at Christchurch author John Rosanowski has written a controversial account of Maungatapu murders, by New Zealand’s most notorious goldfields gang, in June 1866

ON A winter’s afternoon, Felix Mathieu and his three companions were ambushed on a steep hill track by men pointing guns and knives at them. Richard Burgess and his gang lay in wait at a trap they had prepared at a big rock beside the track about 2km from the summit. They forced their victims up a creek and on to a hillside where they were tied up and variously strangled, stabbed and shot. The gang killed the travellers’ packhorse and made for Nelson with their victims’ gold and cash, where they were barbered and bathed and spent freely - and made plans to rob a bank. This was the case of the Maungatapu murders, by New Zealand’s most notorious goldfields gang, in June 1866. The colony was gripped by the crime for weeks. The Burgess gang, all Londoners, were New Zealand’s version of Australian bush ranger Ned Kelly. All but one of the foursome had been transported to Tasmania as convicts. Burgess, Thomas Kelly and Philip Levy were convicted and hanged in Nelson. Joseph Sullivan turned against his gang, giving evidence against them, and in return was not charged. He was subsequently convicted of a separate murder committed one day earlier but escaped the

After he finished teaching he became chief examiner for school certificate history, among other roles. Over that time he has researched and written novels such as Bottled Lightning: The Story of the Reefton Electric Light and A History of the West Coast of the Southern Alps. He is primarily a factual historian, and tends to write about the West Coast having grown up in Reefton.

noose because of the authorities’ need to protect police informers, and the sentence was commuted to life imprisonment. Now author John Rosanowski controversially says his research indicates the Supreme Court jury got it wrong. “It seems clear that two innocent men were executed,” said Rosanowski, who has published his historical novel on the case, Treachery Road. “Kelly and Levy arrived back in Nelson unaware of the murders. Kelly thought robbery had taken place. Even on the gallows, Kelly said he was being executed for the murder of people he hadn’t even seen. Mathieu was the proprietor of Cafe de Paris at the

Deep Creek goldfield in Marlborough’s Wakamarina Valley, where the output of gold had fallen. Levy had visited Deep Creek and heard of Mathieu’s plans to go to the West Coast to set up a new store, so would have known the businessman would be carrying a substantial amount of money. Mathieu set out with storekeepers John Kempthorne and James Dudley, and gold miner James de Pontius. With a packhorse, they were walking over the Maungatapu Track, then a rough route between Marlborough and Nelson and now a shingle road popular with mountainbikers. The gang, who had been staying at Canvastown,

left ahead of the Mathieu party. On their way to their trap at what is now called Murderers Rock, they caught up with solo traveller James Battle, 54, a labourer and former whaler. Near the Pelorus River, they partially strangled Battle, robbed him of his 3 pounds 17 shillings, and left him to die in a shallow grave. Only gradually did the Nelson police become convinced that Mathieu’s group was missing, after a friend who had been following them at a distance became concerned and made his own inquiries. Eventually a massive search got going and one by one the gang were arrested after the first, Philip Levy, was recognised in the Wakatu Hotel by a Deep Creek gold miner.

Other authors have pointed to the unreliability of parts of Sullivan’s story, but Rosanowski says his research of British and Australian convict records found Sullivan was even more of a liar than had been thought. At trial he continually tried to get witnesses who were on the track to

say that they had seen evidence of their camp etc., but no witness out of the several who were on the track over the relevant period corroborated their claim.’’ The execution was covered at length in newspapers. Nelsonians perched themselves on Church Hill and other high points for a glimpse of the grim proceedings, which ran late owing to long speeches by Kelly and Levy, who proclaimed their innocence to the last.

Plaster casts were made from moulds of the men’s skulls, allowing their study for “phrenology”, now considered a pseudoscience, in which it was thought personal characteristics could be determined from the shape of the head. The provincial superintendent, Alfred Saunders, kept the men’s preserved skulls and brains and later gave them to the Nelson Phrenological Society. The five Maungatapu victims were buried at the Wakapuaka cemetery and a memorial was erected. A plaque marks the location of Murderers Rock on Maungatapu Track. Sullivan was despised, both in prison and in the community. He was transferred to Dunedin, then to Mt Eden jail, before being deported to England in 1874. He returned to Australia, where he was arrested. Victoria tried to deport him to New Zealand, but New Zealand refused.

Businesses to celebrate initiatives with awards

THE BURNT pine longhorn beetle (arhopalus tristis) is a 25-30mm-long species native to Europe, Northern Asia and Africa. Accidentally introduced into New Zealand in the 1950s, it has spread throughout both islands where it attacks dead or dying pine trees. Larvae of this species are similar-looking to huhu grubs and feed on the inner bark of dead pine, particularly the trees killed by fire. The larvae leave trails of redbrown dust called frass, where

they bore lengthwise with the wood grain. Beetles also devalue the wood by vectoring a fungi that causes sapstain. Females lay between five to 50 opaque, white, cigar-shaped eggs (0.5 x 1.8mm) on bark of dead or fire-damaged trees as soon as 24 hours after being scorched. High densities of this species causes significant economic problems. The larvae of the click beetle (thoramus wakefieldi) is the only known predator recorded in New Zealand.

AN EVENT will be held to celebrate Selwyn businesses’ commitment to environmental sustainability and community involvement. The Lincoln Envirotown Trust will host the event to present awards for the New Responsible Business Awards project on Friday, November 3. Lincoln Envirotown trustee Sue Jarvis said the businesses taking part this year will be thanked for their efforts in completing a new assessment process, and for their commitment to sustainability and community involvement. The awards are supported by the district council and will be presented by district councillor Craig Watson. Guest speakers James McDonald of Yealands Winery Ltd and The Laboratory owner Martin Bennett will talk about their sustainability experiences. Dr Jarvis said the awards’ assessors, who have been visiting businesses throughout Selwyn, have been impressed with the huge number of initiatives businesses are under taking to lessen their impact on the environment. Driven Small Mazda big on performance By Ross Kiddie I’M ON one of my favourite Selwyn roads, the stretch includes short straights mixed with a combination of tight and open corners. The car is responding delightfully to the way it is being steered and I’m being entertained by its handling and balance. I’m thinking that this could be the best evaluation drive I’ve had for 2017. No, I’m not driving a sports car or anything exotic. In fact, I’m in one of New Zealand’s budget models – a Mazda2 to be exact. The reason why I’m so smitten is not because the Mazda2 is fast or exciting, its performance is honest and it works hard to please through the chassis, but the series is priced for affordability and in terms of all-round value for money it a real attention-grabber. Not only does it drive purposefully at all speeds, you get a lot of kit on Mazda2, and for a car which lists under $30k it is a rather special purchase. The test car was in Limited specification and it sits at $29,695; an entry-level GLX variant comes in at $21,945 while a GSX comes in at $24,945. I’m picking the GSX would be the car for me but the Limited variant does get a lot of kit, features which are included elsewhere in the Mazda line-up. Such are the changes for 2017,

the Mazda2 could certainly be described as a facelift, there aren’t a lot of cosmetic enhancements but there are new side mirrors, grille and wheel changes. On the inside the dash panel graphics have been enhanced for clarity, there’s a new centre console display, while trim materials have been upgraded. More importantly, there have been chassis changes to promote the driving experience and that’s what I noticed during the time I tackled the exit from the Waimakariri River gorge. The most significant development is the addition of G-Vectoring Control which improves handling and stability especially during emergency

avoidance manoeuvres. In Limited specification that also combines with a suite of other collision avoidance technologies such as smart city brake support and driver attention alert. Together, these functions provide the Mazda2 driver with confidence at all speeds, you don’t need to be moving along at pace, in everyday situations the newcomer feels in control of itself and has a decisive feel from behind the wheel which will lure drivers of all ages. That is the reason why I like the car’s balance so much, it just feels right from behind the wheel and you feel so much part of the car. That’s an aspect Mazda is build-

ing into all of its range, and along with the superb feel of quality that accompanies it, it’s no surprise that the new Mazda2 appeals and the entire companies line-up in general. I’ve driven several from the manufacturer recently, and it’s fair to say the company has upped the ante in terms of desirability. Under the bonnet sits a 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated engine which drives out of a conventional sixspeed automatic transmission. I mention that because Mazda hasn’t developed its turbocharging techniques any further and I guess it doesn’t need to. It claims 81kW and 141Nm from the engine and with a 4.9l/100km (57mpg) combined cycle fuel usage claim, the figures are healthy. There is also a sport mode which the driver can activate for busier engine behaviour, and if you couple that to a manual sequential gearshift function the

sporty feel of Mazda2 will come into its own. I left the evaluation car mostly in normal mode and enjoyed the interaction between engine and gearbox, it is a traditional way of drive and for that reason I warmed to it, changes are crisp and smooth and the engine stays on song. Even though the area of maximum torque is high at 4000rpm, the Mazda2 is light and it doesn’t take a lot of energy to move it quickly (0-100km/h in 9.5sec), the engine is unstrained and responsive. The Limited rides on 185/60 x 16in Dunlop tyres, and even though their footprint isn’t wide they have a solid tenure with the road surface and provide the driver with strong feedback as to how they are reacting under pressure. The spring and damper rates also favour the uneven surface of Christchurch’s roads, while occupant comfort has been an engineering priority. Christchurch is a tough market for Mazda2, there’s some fairly hefty competition here from Suzuki and its clever marketing campaign. However, Mazda also has a free servicing programme which is most tempting – three years or 100,000km. All factors considered, the Mazda2 is a compelling buying proposition.

Turbocharged engine for Honda CRV By Ross Kiddie I’VE BEEN in an out of the Honda dealer’s showroom frequently in the past few weeks, picking up and dropping off evaluation cars. There’s a certain feeling you get when a business is busy, it feels vibrant and, for lack of better words, somewhat exciting. It doesn’t surprise me that Honda are drawing in the public at the moment, several new models have launched close to each other and that generally lures in new buyers, and also those who are just curious. Importantly for Honda, a new CRV has just landed and the popular sport utility vehicle arrives hard on the heels of the new Civic hatchback and Civic Type R, the latter an eagerly-awaited hot-hatch. The reason why I mention Civic in this evaluation of the CRV sport utility vehicle, is because some Civic models share the same engine; yes, the fourcylinder, 1.5-litre turbocharged unit which powers Civic RS and RS Sport is the same mechanical element that powers the CRV, albeit the latter gets a crank up in power, it is rated with 141kW and 240Nm against the Civic’s 127kW and 220Nm. Before there’s any thought that

a 1498cc engine in an SUV just doesn’t cut it, think again, recent generation CRVs have always had an engine with power outputs of around 148kW, the new unit is far from distant. It also uses a lot less fuel than ever before. Honda rates it with a 7.4-litre per 100km (38mpg) combined cycle average, which is a lot better than the previous generation model at 8.7l/100km (32mpg). During my testing time the new CRV was constantly providing an 8.8l/100km display along with a 6l/100km (47mpg) instantaneous figure at 100km/h on the highway, the new engine just loping over at 2000rpm. Therein lies another secret, the turbocharged unit provides maxi-

mum torque all of the way from 2000rpm to 5000rpm, that’s a broad spread and allows for solid response to throttle request no matter the speed. If you also add into the equation the seamless supply of gearing you get from a continuously variable automatic transmission, you have a driveline that is remarkably responsive and cohesive. There are four new CRV variants, they start at $32,900 for an entry-level two-wheel-drive model, topping out at $47,900 for the four-wheel-drive Sport Sensing, the car this evaluation focuses on. As its name suggests, Sensing incorporates a raft of safety sys-

tems which use crash avoidance sensors and features to remind the driver of traffic or objects which surround the vehicle. While the CRV is generally known as a capable four-wheeldrive vehicle in loose surface environments, it must be remembered it can’t conquer everything. The test car was showing just 300km on the odometer when I picked it up, for fear of getting it dirty I didn’t put it to the test away from the seal. However, on the media launch for the model I was set loose on roads south of Auckland, and together with a large section of rutted roadworks and getting lost on some shingle back roads, I can report the CRV has suspension which absorbs well hits from uneven surfaces, and the driveline is engineered so that

the tyres maintain their tenure on the road surface. The spring and damper settings are also structured for comfort and that is a compromise not all car engineers get right, especially in an SUV. However, the CRV cocoons all occupants, and having grown into an SUV that is definitely medium-size there is a wealth of onboard space which adds to that feel. In terms of on-road handling, the big Michelin tyres (235/60 x 18in) have a wide contact with the road surface and provide purposeful information back to the driver. The CRV’s handling manners are exquisite for an SUV. Honda has a special way in which it does its interiors. The CRV is plush with leather trim and there is a cockpit layout that is complex yet intuitive. Even at almost $48k the new CRV can be described as a value purchase, it gets a high level of kit, and as I’ve eluded to many times in the past, the way Honda’s designers can squeeze space out of its interiors is just amazing, the CRV has cargo carrying capacity to burn, along with a practical, functional occupant area. The new CRV builds on success and epitomises Honda’s focus on family-friendly vehicles. Nothing has been left to chance.

Enjoying nature & talking to others can relieve stress For something so common among us, it’s a huge shame that talking about mental wellbeing is still regarded as a bit taboo, or somehow weak. We’ve got to get rid of that sort of nonsense attitude. Last week was Mental Health Awareness Week, with the theme being “Nature is Key – Unlock Your Wellbeing”. Not only during awareness week, but at any time, escaping stressful or ‘same old rut’ work and home environments, eating your lunch in a park or at the beach, taking the family for a weekend bush walk, etc. can lift spirits, put you back in touch with Nature, and get you thinking about your health, your priorities – and whether you may need to reach out for help or advice. Federated Farmers president Katie Milne said she welcomed the focus on mental health and talking through issues and feelings with others. “Our great outdoors can also be a wonderful tonic,” she pointed out. However, for rural people, Mother Nature can also be a source of considerable stress. Storms, floods, ailing livestock, droughts, etc., can ratchet up financial woes, relationship strains and the feeling

“it’s all too much”. “We revel in our lifestyle in rural New Zealand – its beauty, and our role putting top-quality food on family tables here and around the world. But if you let it, farming can be a lonely job too,” Katie said. She said the real message of Mental Health Week was that if the stress is getting too much, it’s not smart to tough it out on your own. “Talk to your partner, a friend, a neighbour or reach out to one of the professional and confidential help agencies,” she said. Figures released recently by Chief Coroner Judge Deborah Marshall show (provisional statistics) 606 Kiwis took their own life in 2016/17, up from 579 the year before. Men are dying by a suicide at a rate of three men to one woman. Other research shows the suicide rate in New Zealand’s rural sector was 20-50 per cent higher than in urban areas. The Mental Health Foundation, sourcing

Ministry of Health data, reports that mental disorders are the third-leading cause of health loss for New Zealanders (11.1 per cent of all health loss), behind cancers (17.5 per cent) and vascular and blood disorders (17.5 per cent). “For something so common among us, it’s a huge shame that talking about mental wellbeing is still regarded as a bit taboo, or somehow weak. We’ve got to get rid of that sort of nonsense attitude,” Katie said. “We can’t solve every challenge by ourselves. Your loved ones will feel devastated if you never gave them the chance to understand how you were really feeling.” Katie, who is on the Council of Rural Health Alliance Aotearoa New Zealand, also has a message for the incoming government: “It’s past time the inequalities of access to health services for the 600,000 people living in rural New Zealand were addressed.”

Sheep & beef farm profits forecast to improve As the 2017-18 meat export season begins, Beef + Lamb New Zealand’s New Season Outlook 2017-18 report forecasts beef and lamb prices to remain similar to the previous season, despite an expected weakening of the New Zealand dollar. The report estimates farm profit before tax to increase 6.6 per cent to $90,200 for 2017-18 on average for sheep and beef farms. “This outlook sets the scene for steady meat prices and production in 201718. However, strong improvements are expected in revenue from deer and velvet, as production increases, and from wool, which is coming off low prices,” B+LNZ chief economist Andrew Burtt says. Earnings before interest, tax, rent and manager’s salary (EBITRm) per farm, which provides a benchmark for viewing farms on a comparable base, is forecast to increase by 3.1 per cent to $158,800. “A slight drop in the national sheep flock was driven by a drop in breeding ewes, but this was tempered by a lift in the number of hoggets, particularly on the East Coast of the North Island.” A rise in the number of beef cattle (+2.8 per cent) was largely driven by weaner cattle being carried over into the 201718 farming year in response to good feed conditions and firm prices, which were due to tighter availability and strong store cattle prices in 2016-17. “As beef cattle prices have continued at comfortable levels and production conditions have improved, some farmers have been motivated to increase the number of beef cattle they have because cattle are less labour-intensive than sheep.” Mr Burtt says much of the outlook

depends on the value of the New Zealand dollar, which is expected to ease as major trading economies strengthen in 2017-18. The New Zealand dollar strengthened in 2016-17, to average 71 cents against the US dollar, up three cents on the previous season. “The US dollar is significant for New Zealand’s export-focused sheep and beef industry because 70 per cent of meat export volume is sold in USD-denominated transactions.” Total farm expenditure is forecast to rise marginally (+0.5 per cent) this season. Though fertiliser prices are expected to remain steady, a lift in spending on fertiliser is expected as farmers continue to focus on

improving their soils’ productive capacity. The increase is expected to outweigh a reduction in expenditure on interest, and repairs and maintenance. Much of the 6.6 per cent increase in the average farm profit before tax on sheep and beef farms results from revenue of deer and velvet (+10 per cent), wool (+10 per cent) and cash crops (+4.8 per cent). Sheep and beef revenue are expected to remain similar as small increases in production and easing exchange rates counter softening export prices. Burtt says that while there were disruptions to the international beef market in 2016-17, demand is expected to remain reasonable this year, driven by China.

Continuing tight sheepmeat supplies in Australia and New Zealand, particularly mutton, are expected to support prices, with exchange rates the prime uncertainty. Export lamb production is forecast to increase marginally (+0.5 per cent) in 201718. While exports to the EU, including the UK, dropped in 2016 17, the EU accounted for 36 per cent of exports and remained greater than China. However, China remained the largest single country market for New Zealand lamb, accounting for 33 per cent of volume. New Zealand beef production is expected to be down slightly (-0.9 per cent) on last season as the average carcass weight is forecast to be lower.

Summer veges can be safely planted AS OUR recent weather has served to prove October is sometimes an unsettled month, but by the end of the month, temperatures have usually risen and the growth in the garden abounds. There are a million tasks to do in the garden; all enjoyable, especially the planting of the summer vegetable garden. It’s probably the most active month of the year in the vegetable garden. Prepare the area well by adding in new compost in significant quantities. All summer vegetables can now be safely planted, including courgettes/zucchini, cucumbers, beans, beetroot, carrots, celery, corn, leeks, lettuce, melons, onions, radish, pumpkin and tomato. To avoid vegetables all maturing at one time, stagger your plantings as continuous cropping and supply is much preferable. As plants become established, apply light side dressings of vegetable fertiliser to help develop strong healthy plants. Water young plants regularly and deeply to encourage a strong root system. The last of winter flowing annuals can now be removed and the soil prepared for new plantings. As with the vegetable plot, add plenty of compost to

vines are now growing vigorously. Trim growth where it is not required. Mulch trees with crushed bark as the soil warms up to prevent weed growth and aid water retention during the hot, dry summer months. Early varieties of strawberries will begin to ripen towards the end of October. Check plants for any signs of grey mould (botrytis). Remove any infected leaves and ensure there is enough pea straw, mulch or hay around plants to keep developing berries clean and healthy It’s a busy time for lawn lovers. The first application of lawn fertiliser can now be made; hopeful-

ly at the same time as spring rain, otherwise water it thoroughly after applying. Sow seed where there are bare parts of the lawn, add new topsoil before broadcasting the seed and lightly water to activate germination. Mow your lawn regularly to encourage vigorous growth. Classical winter flowering shrubs such as rhododendrons, camellias and azaleas are now coming to the end of flowering. They may require some minor pruning before they break into spring growth. Apply fertiliser to these plants in late October and apply mulch all around your shrubs. Now is a great time to plant

Apply the mulch!

Sowing seeds is pretty easy, all the instructions are on the packet! Make sure you follow these, and choose seeds that are going to grow at this time of the year. If you sow winter-loving crops now, they aren’t going to grow! Here are some seeds you can sow now; Carrot, lettuce, beetroot, peas, coriander, silverbeet, radishes, capsicum and courgette. For more options, head to your local garden centre and grab some seed packs, or seedlings if you are ready for them now! There will be a wide range of seedlings available for you to get started with planting now.

Weeds will be popping up more frequently now, so make sure that you remove them as soon as you can. Weeds compete with your plants for space, water and nutrients, therefore your plants won’t do as well if they have weeds all around them. Spend some time removing all the weeds, then add some Organic Compost in to the soil. This will help to provide some much needed organic matter, as well as aid in water retention and weed suppression.

Applying bark to your garden not only makes the area look great, but it has a lot of benefits as well.

If you have planted potatoes, this month you will need to mound them up. Mounding potatoes is an important part of the whole growing process.

There are a number of articles out at the moment that are highlighting Legionnaires. Whilst the chances of you contracting the disease are rare, it is always important to practice safe gardening and to know the facts. Here is what you need to know. • Wear gloves when gardening • Always wash your hands when you are finished. • If you are opening bags, make sure you open them in a well-ventilated area and open it away from your face • Avoid inhaling dust or droplets from potting mix and compost If you develop any flu-like symptoms 2-7 days after working with potting mix or compost, head to the Dr to get checked out. Make sure you tell them you have been gardening, so they can test for Legionellosis.

For existing lawns you will need to add some much needed fertiliser – especially if you haven’t done it for a while.

It helps to cover and protect the tubers from damage, and from insects. If they turn green they become inedible and go to waste, and you don’t want the insects to get to them before you do!

Coreopsis are easy-care colour By Henri Ham COREOPSIS ARE a fantastic plant to grow at this time of year. Planted now, they will thrive in the summer sun – which, fingers crossed, should arrive at some point. Their love of the sun makes them super easy-care. Once planted, unless there’s a drought, they don’t need much watering at all. Three varieties which produce, bright, yellow, sunny flowers are early sunrise, rising sun and sunburst. Early sunrise has green leaves with golden-yellow, semidouble flowers. Rising sun produces double golden-yellow flowers with red eyes. Sunburst also produces golden-yellow, semi-double and double flowers. All three make great borders and lovely cut flowers. Once you’ve got your plants, be sure to grow them in the sunniest spot in your garden around 40-50cm apart. Give them a light watering and then let them do their thing. When they start flowering
